From West Coast Writers (Spring 2010)
Anthony Dalton's latest book River Rough, River Smooth was published in January by Natural Heritage/Dundurn Press. He has just signed an agreement to produce a series of books in the Amazing Stories series for Heritage House; the first four will be published within the next year. He also has an agreement with Dundurn for two more books.
In January, Anthony topped the bill at Night of the Living Sailors, a nautical authors' event on Saltspring Island. The evening was so popular that it was standing room only.
In February, Anthony was a featured reader and panellist at the Galiano Island Literary Festival, followed by a visit to Toronto for a reading at Ben McNally Books, plus readings at Ontario Library Expo.
Tatiana Bandurina, author of Voices of Our Children, received the Silver award for Adult Nonfiction from Mom's Choice Awards!
Cathie Borrie's writing has been shortlisted in the CBC Literary Awards national competition for the third time in five years. Following closely on the heels of the CBC Shortlist Announcement, Cathie is presenting an excerpt from her creative nonfiction lyrical memoir, The Other Side of Here, at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in Greece in March. The presentation will combine a reading of an excerpt from the text with a self-produced dance-themed film clip, intended to serve as a cinematic metaphor for the essence of the writing.
Jane Hall spoke on March 4th, International Women's Day, about "Successes and failures of the past 50 years" at the Fraser River Presentation Theatre, Township of Langley Civic Facility.
Jean Kay's article titled "Faith is Key" was published in the February issue of Science of Mind magazine (circulation: 70,000.
Bernice Lever will have her poem, "This is not my body", reprinted in an anthology Celebrating Poets over 70 by Tower Poetry magazine and McMaster University. Her poem, "Atonement" was in Poemata, CPA newsletter, and on site for Swords & Cyclamens in Israel. She is busy on the organizing committee for "Write On Bowen" writers' festival for July 2-4, 2010.
Bernice has also had two poems accepted for publication in March by Four and Twenty, a monthly online poetry journal.
On February 6, Gordon Mumford and Bernice Lever were at Arts Showcase at the Shadbolt Centre, helping at the Burnaby Writers' Society table. Later, they were both readers for the World Poetry New Westminster at a New Westminster venue.
On February 13, Gordon Mumford and other war veterans involved were presented with medallions by J.P. Balkenende, the Dutch Prime Minister. The medallions commemorate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands in 1944/45. Gordon presented copies of The Black Pit to the Dutch Consolate and to the West Vancouver students who will attend the ceremonies in Holland, Belgium, and Vimy Ridge.
Prior to her May visit to Toronto to participate in Forest of Reading celebrations for her OLA Silver Birch Express-nominated Meeting Miss 405, Lois Peterson launched her newest children's novel The Ballad Of Knuckles McGraw at the Newton Library (13795 - 70th Ave. Surrey) on Saturday, April 10, followed by a FREE creative writing/storytelling workshop for children. Meeting Miss 405 is also a nominee for the Saskatchewan Diamond Willow award and the 2010 BC Chocolate Lily Award.
Lois recently presented a memoir workshop for the Port Moody Public Library, was selected as a Federation of BC Writers' Off the Page presentor, and in April presented "Six Steps to Writing Success" for the Mission Library.
Patrick Taylor read at Harbourfront in Toronto ON in March, plus other locations back east. He was again on the National Best Sellers list: all four of his Irish Country Doctor series books ranked between 4th and 14th place.
